A brief research overview

On this page, I will briefly discuss research projects I have recently been involved in. Where necessary links to original studies are provided. Please also link to the researchgate profile in the socials link below.

Randomized controlled trial: COVID-19 Vaccines

COVID-19 pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccines were developed and tested. In our trial (the "switch" trial), we tested the immune responses in healthy volunteers.

After an initial "Janssen" vaccine (a one-shot vaccination), there were questions about immune responses and whether boosters were necessary. We aimed to tested whether boosting was necessary and what would be the best combination vaccine be.

Below you find the link to the original protocol study and the two main studies that were published.

Randomized controlled trial: Therapeutic Drug monitoring

Therapeutic drug monitoring

Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) might be used to optimise pharmacological target attainment and therefore decrease therapeutic failure. Dose adjustments will need to be made in an early phase of treatment, since quick intervention in antibiotics is essential for patients with sepsis. To the best of our knowledge, no RCT has investigated the effect of TDM of beta-lactam and fluoroquinolones on clinical outcomes in critically ill patients. The results of these trials are available below.

Methodology: the value of limitations

Limitations

Limitations sections of a discussion are important for many reasons. Foremost, when such paragraph discusses all limitations associated with the study, it aids interpretation of the results and may guide future research. However, many researchers feel uncomfortable with writing a limitations paragraph fearing to point out weaknesses of their studies. As a consequence, the limitation paragraph remains rudimentary. In this study we discuss the importance of such paragraph and provide a guideline to start to reflect on your own study.
